Siolta and Aistear

Here are Sioga Beaga we are dedicated to the introducing the new framework of Siolta and Aistear in each room to enrich the learning and development of all children who attend the creche.

– Aistear, the Framework for Early Learning

Following consultation with the early childhood sector, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) has produced a curriculum framework for children from birth to 6 years. It can be used in different types of settings including children’s homes, childminding, day care and preschool settings.

This framework is now called Aistear, meaning journey and is modelled on the New Zealand Curriculum, known as Te Whariki. It does not prescribe any one type of curriculum but rather establishes shared values and themes which should guide whatever curriculum practitioners choose to use. As the name implies, we can take many routes towards the same goals. Ultimately, according to Aistear, early childhood care and education must support children’s sense of:

  • Well being
  • Identity and belonging
  • Communication
  • Exploring and thinking

Aistear proposes that these goals are achieved through the contexts of play and caring learning relationships with adults and peers. In this way it makes very strong links between care and education in the early years and firmly establishes the child’s right to a safe, stimulating, nurturing and playful environment.

– Siolta

Early childhood, the period from birth to six years, is a significant and unique time in the life of every individual. Every child needs and has the right to positive experiences in early childhood. As with every other phase in life, positive supports and adequate resources are necessary to make the most of this period. Provision of such supports and resources should not be conditional on the expectations of the economy, society or other interests.

Preschool Care

The Preschool Room is a large comfortable and colourful room where each childs individual needs are met. There are different areas for the children to use their imagination and communicate i.e. Home corner, dressing up area, shop, construction area, cosy corner and many more.

Here childrens play can become more structure and a daily routine will be set in place used the Siolta and Aistear curriculum.
Children will begin to socialise in this room and will enjoy playing and interacting with their peers.

Here we will help your child to toilet train and have toilet facilities off the preschool room.
Small beds are available in our sleep room for those children who wish to take a break from their fun filled day!

Wobbler Care

The wobbler room is a bright and welcoming room, it caters for children aged 1 to 2 1/2 years old. There are nappy changing facilities off the wobbler room.

The wobbler room consists of a ball pool, a wobbler slide, push toys, mucical toys, activity tables, book area, a wide range of toys that are age appropriate for the children.

There is a daily routine set in place by the wobbler room leader so the children can get used to their own routine while learning and developing at their own pace. The wobblers activities are painting, colouring, play dough, music, songs, rhymes, dancing, freeplay and more.

Our Wobbler Room is where your child will spend much of their day experimenting, exploring and beginning to socialise. We provide you with a Daily Report sheet detailing all nutrition, sleep periods, nappy-changing, play and learning activities, behaviour and any necessary medical administration.

The wobbler room has its own access to the large outdoor play area which we try to use as often as possible to ensure the children get enought fresh air and space to explore and have fun. The wobblers have access to the sleep room for their daily naps which have cots and small beds.

Montessori Care

The Montessori system provides the ‘prepared environment’ made up of Sensorial, Practical Life, Maths and Language sections, each one containing its own specially designed equipment. Each child develops and learns at their own pace and is encouraged to reach their full potential in a relaxed environment.

Records are kept on each individual childs development to ensure the teacher can provide the appropriate ‘work’ and activities for each child. Our staff are selected very carefully, not only for their qualifications and experience but also for their love of children. We understand that continuity of care for the children is paramount and for that reason we are totally committed to promoting staff loyaltythis room children are encouraged to become more independant and to do things for themselves and each child is valued and ‘unique’.
